Back to Ranches

Palomar Mountain is an oasis in Northern San Diego County. The mountain is 6000 ft high and separates Temecula to the north from Pauma Valley to the South. Known as the home to the Palomar Observatory, which is the 2nd largest telescope in the world.  It is also famous for its abundant and pure mountain spring water, bottled by a dozen plus companies and delivered all over Southern California. Most of the mountain is State and National Park and boasts miles of forested trails for hiking, with some areas for horseback riding and mountain biking.

Dream Valley Ranch is located just below the Observatory in the Mendenhall Valley at 4500 feet elevation. One of the most spectacular ranches in California, this ranch consists of 380 acres of pristine meadows, ponds, rolling hills and is dotted with huge oaks, firs, and cedars.

Originally settled by Indians, the valley was revered for its water and named Malava, which means, 'Medicine Water'.  Later, horse and cattle rustlers hid their animals in the lush meadows. Then gold was discovered and was mined for several years on the property.  In the early 1970's, Arthur H. Voss, an entrepreneur in the insurance field and pipeline industry, purchased the land from the Mendenhall family. He had flown over the valley in his helicopter, thought it was the most beautiful land he had ever seen, and had to have it. His goal was to develop the land into a mountain ranch and still maintain the pristine beauty and natural setting. Mr. Voss studied the ranch for years and hired the best architects, builders and engineers to transform the property into a beautiful and well-built working ranch.

Every inch of the ranch was carefully thought out. The main home, designed by the famous architect, Brion Jinnette, was built to let the outdoors in. South facing and set at the top of a knoll, huge walls of glass take in the spectacular panoramic views of the entire valley. The home incorporates a helicopter pad, designed for a Bell Jet Ranger. There is a huge stone deck that wraps around three sides of the home, ideal for large outdoor parties.

The interior of the home is warm with beautiful woods, granite, marble and stone. The walls of glass overlook the beauty of this mountain paradise. The home boasts four large bedrooms, each with private bath and walk in closet. There is a formal dining room and living room and a bright breakfast room with glass ceiling letting in the morning light. A beautiful library with large fireplace and walls of glass look out to an ancient oak tree and the western meadows. The master suite is magnificent with an open beam ceiling and a skylight directly above the bed for viewing the stars. Watch the sun rise in the east through the glass wall of windows.  When the snow is falling you really appreciate the floor-to-ceiling, granite fireplace.  With a kitchenette/bar in the room, it is such a fabulous area to enjoy your morning coffee.  The master bath has a Jacuzzi tub for two, large walk-in granite shower, built-in TV entertainment center and linen cabinet and exercise area and large walk-through closet takes you to a room for a sauna.

The ranch is fenced with five miles of V-mesh fencing and has been home to sheep, cattle, buffalo and horses.  There are 10 pastures ranging in size from 25 acres to 121 acres. 125 acres have commercial irrigation and pop up sprinklers.  However, pastures normally stay green through July without irrigation. The pastureland is excellent with many varieties of grasses and clover. The ranch has four springs and six wells. One commercial well can pump up to 1200 GPM of pure mountain water. There are seven large ponds with spillways designed to handle heavy rains.  Most of the ponds are stocked with bass, bluegill and croppy. The fishing is superb!

Two large steel barns total approximately 12,000 sf. The equipment barn has an office, workshop and plenty of room for heavy equipment and a helicopter.  The other 6000 square foot barn is currently used as a horse barn with tack room, hay area, corrals, with room for large equipment or horse trailers.

The ranch has a comfortable three bedroom, two bath home, used as a caretaker house, overlooking the bird sanctuary and pond enjoyed by the resident ducks and geese. The home has wrap around decks, a separate two car garage, workshop and large birdhouse.  Some would say, this has the best views looking out over the water.  It could be a great guest house or home for the in-laws.

On the south side of the ranch, is a charming two bedroom, two bath, log home with a wrap-around deck that includes a detached, two car garage. This property is gated and  has a one acre fenced yard. The views from the log home overlook the meadows and private pond. The cabin was actually built as a front row seat for Mr. Voss to watch the construction of his main home across the valley.  This area is heavily wooded and ideal for wildlife photography. Wildlife is abundant on the ranch and includes deer, bobcat, turkey, quail, duck and geese.  The land is also home to a pair of golden eagles who nest at the top of a tall conifer.

The ranch consists of three separate parcels and according to the zoning, could possibly be subdivided into 5 parcels of 40 acres with one 80 acre property. The home is a fifteen minute flight by helicopter from San Diego, ten minutes to Temecula and under 45 minutes to Los Angeles.

Dream Valley Ranch is most definitely one of the most beautiful ranches in California and located in a perfect four season climate close to all of Southern California.
